Nighttime outdoor art event scheduled for Oct. 5, 2024, in downtown Los Angeles

LUMINEX 3.0: Landscape Frequencies brings art and community together on October 5, 2024, from 7:00 to 11:30 PM in an engaging outdoor exhibition using the LA cityscape as a canvas. Multimedia artists JOJO ABOT, Refik Anadol, Alice Bucknell, Nao Bustamante, Petra Cortright, Marc Horowitz, Carole Kim, Alan Nakagawa, Sarah Rara, and LAVA (Los Angeles Video Artists) will transform a five-block radius in the South Park District of downtown with film, sound art installations, performances, and multichannel works starting from West 11th Street & Margo St, Los Angeles. 

Titled Landscape Frequencies, surrealism, absurdism, fragility, voyersim and abstractions of nature aim to reframe our actions, consider the connections between us and our surroundings Alice Bucknell’s The Alluvials explores the politics of drought and water scarcity in Los Angeles, Refik Anadol’s new work, Artificial Realities: California Landscapes, incorporates a raw dataset of 153 million publicly available landscape images of California’s National Parks, Petra Cortright’s surrealist scenes exude beauty, optimism, and freedom, and Carole Kim’s live performance and projected images dive into memory and the landscape of the mind.

Alice Bucknell’s The Alluvials, 2024 is a video game and film project exploring drought politics in Los Angeles through nonhuman characters, combining cinematic modding, custom diffusion models, and drone mapping, and featuring a bespoke immersive experience for LUMINEX with a new score by Ken Yama and design by Tom Joyes.

Sarah Rara, ORCHIS KISS  – 1066 S Hope St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Sarah Rara’s ORCHIS KISS, 2024, is a video and sound work examining orchid flowers as symbols of gender, queerness, politics, and power, blending environmental research with themes of technology, disability, and desire.

Petra Cortright – Untitled – 1225 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Petra Cortright’s new work creates a surrealist landscape inspired by Narnia’s Sea of Flowers, blending Romantic influences with contemporary vision to evoke serenity, beauty, and escapism for urban audiences.

JOJO ABOT, Re.Member – 420 W 11th St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

JOJO ABOT’s Re.Member, 2024, is a performance and video installation that calls for spiritual reconnection and healing by integrating fragmented selves, drawing on generational wisdom and ancient technologies for universal wholeness.

Refik Anadol, Artificial Realities: California Landscapes – 208 W 11th St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Refik Anadol’s Artificial Realities: California Landscapes is an AI Data Sculpture that reimagines California’s National Parks through 153 million landscape images, blending human-machine collaboration to explore nature and reflect a decade-long AI-based art practice rooted in Los Angeles.

Nao Bustamante, Brown Disco – 1224 S Hope St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Nao Bustamante’s *Brown Disco* reimagines the disco ball as both a light source and spaceship, blending minimalism’s theatricality with themes of brownness, creating a soft memorial that celebrates care and comfort in the club.

Carole Kim, Chronicles of Touch: HOWDOESYOURMEMORYWORK – 1155 S Olive St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Carole Kim’s Chronicles of Touch: HOWDOESYOURMEMORYWORK, 2024,  is a textural/textual exploration of questions surrounding our relationship to memory, looping, tracing, and slippage. Joining Kim for this multimedia durational performance will be a stellar ensemble of dance, music, and live visual performers poised to jump into the soup of co-creation and discovery in the moment.

Marc Horowitz, Extremely Limited – 520 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015 

Marc Horowitz’s, Extremely Limited, is a site-specific performance where he must create and deliver a sculpture within three minutes in a confined space, with a fan adding chaos if he fails, humorously critiquing burnout culture and productivity pressures.

Alan Nakagawa, Conical Sound: Simon Rodia/ Antoni Gaudi – South Park Commons, 1114 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 

Alan Nakagawa’s Conical Sound: Simon Rodia/ Antoni Gaudi, is an audio installation that merges acoustics from the Sagrada Familia and Watts Towers, creating an immersive soundscape where participants experience vibratory sounds in industrial lounge recliners, surrounded by pink and yellow lights.

LAVA – Various Artists Participating, – 1225 S Grand Ave (alleyway)

LAVA (Los Angeles Video Artists) will curate, VIDEO FLING, a mini-exhibition at the AVEN showroom featuring cutting-edge audio-visual installations and panoramic window projections, and host a BYOB-inspired outdoor video projection art show, transforming Morrison Alleyway into a dynamic canvas of light and color.

A public opening event will be held at the above starting location, the site of Refik Anadol’s piece, from 7 PM with special artists performance.  Pedicabs will travel the exhibition route and can be reserved before the event; please see the website for details. Complimentary rides are offered for differently-abled persons.

LUMINEX attendees who RSVP through Eventbrite will be offered a special discount to LA Comic Con, held October 4-6, 2024, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
