'Yayoi Kusama: Narcissus Garden' at Rubell Museum, Miami.

On the first anniversary of the opening of its new home in Allapattah, the Rubell Museum exhibition calendar for 2021 features four new exhibitions that showcase the breadth of its extensive holdings in contemporary art. With over 7,200 works across media, the collection features unprecedented range, tracing key artists, moments, and movements in vital art centers over the past 50 years. The exhibitions include solo presentations of work by Genesis Tramaine , the Rubell Museum’s Artist-in-Residence; Hernan Bas; and Yayoi Kusama; and a selection of highlights from the collection with defining and seminal works by artists the Rubells championed early in their careers.

Originally launched in 1993 as the Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Art Foundation, the museum was renamed to underscore the Rubells’ dedication to serving as a public resource. Housed in six former industrial buildings that were connected and transformed by Selldorf Architects, the Museum allows the Rubells to present more of their collection than ever before.

Exhibition details follow below:

  • Genesis Tramaine: Sanctuary – on view through December 12, 2021: Genesis Tramaine, the Rubell Museum’s 2020 Artist-in-Residence, presents Sanctuary, a series of eight paintings the artist created during her six-week residency at the museum. Heavily influenced by her spiritual upbringing and study of the Bible, Traimaine depicts biblical figures and portraits in this series.
  • Hernan Bas – on view through December 12, 2021: Hernan Bas is one of South Florida’s most celebrated artists, whose work incorporates romantic and classical images. The drawings and paintings presented in this exhibition may be read as an allegory of the stages of human life from childhood to youth adolescence.
  • Yayoi Kusama: Narcissus Garden – on view through December 12, 2021: This immersive landscape installation contains 700 stainless steel spheres where each viewer plays the role of Narcissus.
  • Collection Highlights: Ongoing at the museum is a selection of major works from their extensive collection. Artists featured include Nina Chanel Abney, Isa Genzken, Felix Gonzales Torres, Barbara Kruger, Kerry James Marshall, Oscar Murillo, Mary Weatherford, and Lisa Yuskavage.

Out and about over the past two days in beautiful, Out and about over the past two days in beautiful, historic Old Town @visitalexva.
Extraordinary sites of African American history including Freedman’s Cemetery monument pictured. Country’s oldest continually operated farmers market, murals.
Love how walkable and street-level the city is… all 5 miles from D.C. So much to see, do, eat, drink, shop. #visitALX

Inside the wonderous @jmkac Art Preserve in @visit Inside the wonderous @jmkac Art Preserve in @visitsheboygan @travelwisconsin. Opened 1 year ago, the museum is the only of its kind, dedicated to the display and preservation of art environments.
What are art environments? When an artist’s work takes over their studio, home, yard and surroundings and becomes the environment in which the artist lives, that’s an art environment.
A high percentage of these art environments can be found in the upper midwest, and a high percentage of those in #wisconsin, making the Art Preserve both a globally and locally focused institution.
Also true to form for Wisconsin, guests are greeted by a bar upon entry serving a draft beer named after a legendary art environment creator, Fred Smith. It’s damn good. Light. Crisp. Refreshing.

A taste of one of his thought-provoking series, an example of which earned him 2nd place in the nation’s most prestigious portrait photography competition hosted by @nationalportraitgallery.
These color photos also have beadwork embedded on the image, attached to a special backing to the photo paper by Jones.

The @milwaukeeart museum has one of the nation’s finest collections of Georgia O’Keeffe #paintings including all of these which I saw on my visit this week. Do you have a favorite?
Oh yeah, I’m from Wisconsin too.

Mural in @dtjax @cityofjax recalling #Jacksonville Mural in @dtjax @cityofjax recalling #Jacksonville native Augusta Savage’s fabulous “Lift Every Voice and Sing” #sculpture from 1939 World’s Fair in NYC. The song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” was written by fellow Jax native James Weldon Johnson. This mural is now adjacent to @jamesweldonjohnsonpark.
The sculpture was never cast in bronze due to lack of funding.
What public art piece should be installed at the old Landing site? A full size replica of Savage’s sculpture, commonly referred to as “The Harp.”
