In the mid-80s, #pacitaabad learned to scuba dive In the mid-80s, #pacitaabad learned to scuba dive and was fascinated by the underwater world which revealed itself to her. In response, she created a series of spectacular trapunto paintings. Trapunto paintings are like quilts with extra stuffing and to these quilts Abad applied all manner of paint and beads and sequins and shells to depict the fish and corals she observed.
I’ve never seen anything like them before. A celebration of the sea.
@sfmoma has an exhibition of @pacitaabad artworks on view now, including these underwater trapunto paintings, and it’s one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen. Go back through my IG feed for more pics.
The curatorial team at SFMOMA has done a great job hanging these paintings in a gallery to make visitors feel like they’re in an aquarium, surrounded by water.

Beautiful, isn’t it. Ugly, too. This is the pool Beautiful, isn’t it.
Ugly, too.
This is the pool at the former Monson Motor Lodge in #staugustine #florida where in the summer of 1964 the owner poured acid on Black Civil Rights activists who entered his segregated pool. The photo of him doing so appeared the following day on the front page of newspapers around the country, the straw that broke the camel’s back, the singular atrocity which ended the longest filibuster in American history and provided for passage of the Civil Rights Act the next day.
(Side note, did you know the filibuster largely exists in American government to allow white supremacist legislators to single handily block equal rights bills.)
St. Augustine was the site of the attack which spurred passage of the #civilrights act. Not Birmingham or Jackson. St. Augustine was where #martinlutherkingjr was when the bill was passed. Not Atlanta or Montgomery. St. Augustine is CENTRAL to the #civilrightsmovement and this is the history you should discover when visiting.
The Monson Motor Lodge in the Historic District is a Hilton today, but the pool remains, the same pool, the same dimensions, and guests are welcome to go in, without the fear of having acid poured on them.
Bernadette Reeves hosts #blackhistory tours of St. Aug which wrap up at the pool. Look her up online of you’re interested.

One of many reasons why Seattle is the glass art capital of America.

What a treat taking a sneak peek at “Calder: In What a treat taking a sneak peek at “Calder: In Motion” The Shirley Family Collection at @seattleartmuseum. This is the first iteration of an ongoing commitment by the Seattle Art Museum to highlight #alexandercalder following its receipt of a transformational gift of Calder artworks collected by the Shirley Family in #Seattle for 35 years. The gift also provides funding for Calder research, programs, events and education.
Show opens tomorrow and is on view through 8/4/24 as SAM becomes THE place in America to see Calder forevermore.
I LOVE the shadows these pieces make!

Been looking forward to visiting @whotels @wseattl Been looking forward to visiting @whotels @wseattle to see its “Faces” rooms as imagined and painted by @morgan_smile.
Fun murals throughout the property, but the 14th floor is given over ot #morganzion’s portraits in the hallways and guest rooms. Each room portrait is original, this one is ‘Stella,’ and reflects a different #seattle neighborhood to explore, encouraging visitors to get off the beaten tourist track.
Have a look!
