Upon moving to Kansas as a young man, Mitchell visited @fortscottnps Kansas where he learned Kansas was the first state to recruit, train and deploy Black soldiers during the Civil War. The knowledge inspired a series of paintings in 1989, a theme he picked back up following the police murder of George Floyd.

Honorable mention “missing yous” go to Paris and Santa Fe.

Love the color, the impasto, the subject.

Whenever I go to Indy, a trip to Eiteljorg is always on my “to-do” list.
