Jacob Lawrence and Gwendolyn Knight met in New York, spent nearly 60 years together, and lived the remainder of their lives in Seattle.
“Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle,” now travels to the Seattle Art Museum before wrapping up at the Phillips Collection.
The artists represented are Jacob Lawrence, Hughie Lee-Smith, Norman Wilfred Lewis, Lee Krasner, and Marsden Hartley, each of whom advanced narratives about race, gender, and regional identity.
