While many of America’s top art museums are shamefully trying to sell their work to generate revenue, taking these treasures away from the public and placing them in the hands of millionaires, @lucasmuseum continues acquiring MAJOR pieces of American art and American history like Robert Colescott’s 1975 ‘George Washington Carver Crossing the Delaware: Page from an American History Textbook’ from @Sotheby’s on May 12. Purchase price + fees = $15.3M.

The Lucas Museum’s investment in this masterpiece will assure it’s public display, appreciation and growing significance in art history.

I adore the nerve of this painting and it’s flat-out diss of the famous (and laughable in hindsight) Metropolitan Museum ‘Washington Crossing the Delaware’ picture.

In 2018, artists @lavaughnbelle and @jeannetteehlers created and launched the first public monument of a black woman in #Copenhagen.

The #sculpture generated global awareness and acclaim on the centennial year commemorating the sale by #Denmark of the #VirginIslands to the United States on March 31, 1917. On March 4, 2021, the Danish government granted permission to permanently install their groundbreaking public artwork, I AM QUEEN MARY, in front of a former colonial warehouse in Copenhagen.

To now build the permanent sculpture, and a twin monument on St. Croix, #USVI, an international crowdfunding campaign will be unveiled to support the rebel #queen being immortalized.

The monument references Mary Thomas, who came to be named as one of the “Queens of the Fireburn”, leading the largest labor revolt in Danish history in 1878. Fifty plantations and most of the town of Frederiksted in St. Croix were burned in protest of slavery-like conditions. Following significant damage to the sculpture over the last two years, a fundraising campaign to raise $1.5 million for a bronze casting of the figure and a reinforced coral stone plinth will launch on June 8th.

The funds raised will ensure that this towering monument at the entrance to Copenhagen's port acknowledges the legacy of slavery and European colonialism for generations to come.

Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Head of a Bear’ will be offered for sale at @christiesinc in London as a highlight lot in the Exceptional Sale, taking place live on 8 July. This study of a bear’s head, one of less than eight surviving drawings by Leonardo still in private hands outside of the British Royal Collection and the Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth, measuring 2 ¾ x 2 ¾ inches (7 x 7 cm). It is executed in silverpoint on a pale pink-beige prepared paper.

The drawing will be on public exhibition at Christie’s in Rockefeller Centre in New York from Saturday 8 May. It will then go to London where it is expected to sell for £8,000,000-12,000,000.
