Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY, receives major Andrew Wyeth watercolor

The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY, announced on June 29, 2025, receipt of Snowed In (1980), a luminous winter watercolor by Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), as a major gift from collectors Ann Pearsall Brodell and James David Brodell, Sr., M.D. Andrew Wyeth was not previously represented in MAG’s collection.

“We are deeply grateful to Jim and Ann for their generosity,” Sarah Jesse, the Mary W. and Donald R. Clark Director of the Memorial Art Gallery, said. “Their gift ensures that generations of museum visitors can experience the work of one of the most important American painters of the 20th century. We are thrilled to add such a beautiful and significant example of Wyeth’s work to our rich American art holdings.”  

Snowed In—a poignant depiction of the Kuerner family’s Pennsylvania farm—has been previously featured in national Wyeth exhibitions, including Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In at the National Gallery of Art (2014). With this gift, MAG becomes the permanent home for a quintessential example of Wyeth’s emotional realism and mastery of light.

Andrew Wyeth’s depictions of Kuerner Farm include some of his most iconic masterworks in tempera and watercolor. He spoke often of the inspiration he found at Kuerner Farm, including one instance in which he called the charismatic pond reflecting the house “the eye of the earth,” which is the source of the exhibition title.

Andrew Wyeth at Kuerner Farm: The Eye of the Earth, an exhibition of Andrew Wyeth’s Kuerner Farm paintings on view at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem, NC ran from February 15 through May 25, 2025.

“Kuerner Farm completely captivated Wyeth,” Allison C. Slaby, Reynolda’s curator and the exhibition’s co-curator, said. “In his depictions of the farm, we gain a sense of the Kuerner world in its entirety: the land, the hill, the pond, the house, and its inhabitants. For decades, Wyeth had free rein at this singular place. It became for him ‘a world of his own.'”

Snowed In will go on view at the Memorial Art Gallery on August 8, 2025.
