Major Warhol exhibition coming to Taglialatella Galleries Toronto

A major exhibition of works by Andy Warhol is coming to Taglialatella Galleries Toronto April 10 through May 1, 2025. The show, Andy Warhol: Factory Made, will feature the most iconic and sought-after editions created during The Factory’s three decades. The exhibition will also showcase Warhol’s famous silver wig, sunglasses, and other signature personal items authorized by Sotheby’s. Admission to this special exhibitions is free.

A 20th-century icon at the centre of Pop Art, Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1928. Shy, gay and from a working-class, East European immigrant background, Warhol had a very unique understanding of American society that is registered in his art and writing. Synthesizing consumer culture, canonical art history, countercultural activities and his own Catholicism, Warhol’s vast body of work, which includes film and publishing, both reflected and fueled the intense cultural transformations that occurred across the globe during the second half of the twentieth century.

Key works featured in the exhibition from Warhol’s Pop period include the full portfolio of Campbell’s Soup Cans (1968), Flowers (1970), and  Marilyn Monroe (1967). The exhibition showcases the Warhol Ad series created in 1985 including screenprints of Mobil, Van Heusen (Ronald Reagan), Chanel, The New Spirit (Donald Duck), Lifesavers and Volkswagen.

An important theme in the exhibition is Warhol’s political portraits blurring boundaries between public office and stardom. Notable works include Mao (1972). Lenin (1987), and Myths: Uncle Sam (1981). The show also features the 1985 Reigning Queens series, portraying ruling queens at that time: Queen Elizabeth II of England,Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Hockey fans will also be entertained as Wayne Gretzky #99 (1984) will also be on display.
