Limited edition, signed Mickalene Thomas prints for sale

Avant Arte, the marketplace making discovering and owning art radically more accessible, has announced its first time-limited edition collaboration with renowned artist, Mickalene Thomas. Together, they will release two prints – Portrait of Maya #10 and Interior: Red Couch and Landscape to celebrate the artist’s new exhibition Mickalene Thomas: All About Love at The Broad, co-organized with the Hayward Gallery, London and in partnership with the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia. The two prints will be available to all on avantarte.com for 24 hours only on 25 June 2024, as part of Avant Arte’s time-limited editions programme that helps art lovers start collecting art for the first time.

Each of the prints is made by Avant Arte’s master printmakers, Make-Ready. The prints are finished with silkscreen layers of metallic shimmer, high gloss and satin varnish with hand-applied glitter to authentically translate the artist’s use of these materials in her original works.

Prints will be numbered, signed by the artist and come with a signed certificate of authenticity. The 24-hour window to acquire the prints will commence at 6PM BST / 1PM EST on 25 June 2024 exclusively on avantarte.com

Portrait of Maya #10 will be available for €795.00 / approx. $860.00 and Interior: Red Couch and Landscape, 2024 for €675.00 / approx. $725.00 with free international shipping.

“I’m thrilled to be releasing two prints with Avant Arte, which perfectly encapsulate my artistic approach,” Mickalene Thomas said. “Both pieces showcase my affinity for collaging techniques, a fundamental aspect of my creative process. Collage is not only how I draw and perceive, but also how I construct form and composition. In fact, all of my works originate from the concept of collage, as it allows me to merge diverse forms and ideas. This process is deeply ingrained in my thinking, and I’m eager to share my art with a broader audience.”

Thomas’s exhibition at The Broad, All About Love features over 80 works created by the artist over the last 20 years, highlighting how Thomas has mastered and innovated within several disciplines, from mixed-media painting and collage to installation and photography. Mickalene Thomas is known for her focus on Black female representation through portraiture. In her work, the artist often depicts the women from her life, focusing on portraying the qualities she would like her subjects to see in themselves.

“For this collaboration, Mickalene has personally selected these two emblematic works from her oeuvre: Portrait of Maya #10 marks an incredibly important moment in her practice, originally created as a monumental 8ft tall artwork – it was her first painting of such scale and encompasses many of the core elements of her practice – photography, collaging and glitter,” Claire Toole, Senior Artist Lead, Avant Arte, said. “The second print, Interior: Red Couch and Landscape is a previously unseen collage and underlines just how central collaging is to her work. This collaboration offers our collectors an opportunity to collect both – a core work from Mickalene’s artistic history and a new, never seen before artwork.

For the collaboration with Avant Arte, Thomas personally selected Portrait of Maya #10 and Interior: Red Couch and Landscape – to represent her practice and help people to start their collections with seminal pieces from her rich body of work.

Since commencing the programme in 2021, Avant Arte has supported over 14,000 collectors to acquire art for the first time. Artists from the programme include Anish Kapoor, Elizabeth Peyton, Gregory Crewdson, Ai Weiwei, Barry McGee and Ed Ruscha.

Mickalene Thomas: All About Love is on view at The Broad from May 25 through September 29, 2024. Tickets to this special exhibition are now available at thebroad.org
