DC Moore Gallery (535 West 22nd St., New York) presents “Lumens Anima,” a solo exhibition of new paintings by Katia Santibañez. Santibañez’s work teems with energy and utilizes fluid grid structures to examine the intricacies of organic forms.

Prior visits to Rome, gazing upon Bernini sculptures and Baroque churches, followed by Barcelona in awe at Gaudi, and finally, her hometown in France with stained glass in St. Chapelle hypnotized Katia Santibañez. The spirals, colors, and magnificence of these structures gave her an obsessive motivation to render light with a similarly rapt and vibrant effect.

Santibañez began this body of work in her studio in the Bronx which promptly changed in March 2020 when she left for Otis, Massachusetts where she currently resides. The forests around her contain oaks, hemlocks, pine trees, maples, birches, and ferns. During the winter, their barks bare, she saw their resemblance to the human form and the light glowing between the branches recalled to her the columns and stained-glass windows in European cathedrals.

Katia Santibañez also thought about the rise of climate change, forthcoming extinctions, and nature as an endangered sanctuary. The Delight of Solitude (2020) presents an array of watery blues seemingly emerging from behind a wall of darkened stems, evoking the tranquility and embrace of nature as stained glass, while Everywhere and Nowhere (2021) is a complex maze of fiery reds, oranges, and yellows, the spectacle of light radiating outwards.

In other paintings, Santibañez harnesses the form of the spiral, which is a recurring motif in her work that she continues to build upon. Patterned circular and angular forms swirl into a small vanishing point, with a push-and-pull of colors blending into and standing out from one another. For Santibañez, her spiral paintings are about cycles, repetitions, and abstractly the state of societal and ecological turmoil as within the spiral there are two different directions – upwards or downwards, growth or reduction.

“Lumens Anima” will be on view through October 9.

About the Artist

Katia Santibañez is an American artist, born in France. She studied painting at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts.

She has been in residencies at Yaddo, NY; Casa Wabi, Mexico; The Albers Foundation, CT; Sitka, OR; and Civitella Ranieri, Italy.

Her work has been collected internationally and is in both private and public collections including The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; The Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, France; Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, Massachusetts; The Morgan Library and Museum; The Museum of Modern Art; and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY.

The artist lives and works in Otis, Massachusetts and New York, NY.

I have long said my dream den has an Onderdonk #bluebonnet painting. A Texan, he nailed the “feel” as only someone passionate for and intimate with that landscape could.
Following the bluebonnet painting are others from Onderdonk including from his time in New York, which I knew nothing about.

Helen Frankenthaler’s ‘Eden Revisited’ (1967 Helen Frankenthaler’s ‘Eden Revisited’ (1967-1976) sure to brighten your day, it did mine on a recent visit to @sama_art @visitsanantonio. Stunning, vivid, massive (10-plus-feet tall), expressive… up close you can see the paint stains. 
I see so much drama in this painting, so much certainty, confidence. Of all the past artists I could have met, @helenfrankenthalerfoundation would be high on the list.

What most caught my eye were all the 18-wheelers. Are these a reference to “urban renewal” and the siting of I-95 through the heart of Young’s #overtown #miami neighborhood. 
As occurred across America during 1950s-80s, so-called urban renewal was a tactic used by white politicians to destroy thriving Black communities by running interstates through them to aide white suburbanites in getting to jobs in town faster.
Young experienced Overtown on both sides of #urbanrenewal and I can’t help thinking all these trucks are commentary on I-95.
