Disney artist Eyvind Earle receiving show at Elverhøj Museum

Eyvind Earle, an internationally acclaimed artist who helped revolutionize film animation with his work on Disney classics, is being honored with an exhibition at the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art in Slovang, CA. The debut of “The Magical World of Eyvind Earle” will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, November 25, 2023, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The public is invited and refreshments will be served, with no charge for admission.

Earle (1916-2000) was born in New York, but raised in Hollywood. An accomplished artist from an early age, he landed a job as an assistant sketch artist for United Artists while still in his teens. From the time of his solo show in France at the age of 14, his fame grew steadily.

By the early 1950s he was working as a background painter for Walt Disney Studios, where he contributed to the classic animated feature films “Sleeping Beauty” and “Lady and the Tramp,” among others.  Earle later created extensive watercolors, oils, sculptures and drawings, and in 1974, he began making limited edition serigraphs. 

Between 1968 and 1978 Earle resided in Solvang.

“The imagery derived from themes of the Santa Ynez Valley are unmistakable in many of Earle’s paintings and serigraphs,” Elverhøj Executive Director Sandie Mullin said. “He had a totally original perception of landscape and found inspiration in the natural beauty of the Central Coast.”

The Eyvind Earle exhibition running through January 15, 2024, is also a special opportunity for collectors because original oil paintings and limited-edition serigraphs will be available for purchase. Books and notecards that showcase Earle’s work will also be available in the Elverhøj Museum store.

Exhibition programming will Include a family screening of “Sleeping Beauty” at Bethania Lutheran Church on January 6 at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

Elverhøj Museum of History & Art Is located at 1624 Elverhoy Way in Solvang. Hours are Thursday through Monday from 11:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. There Is no charge for admission, but a $5 donation is suggested.
