A celebration of Black womanhood at Tanya Weddemire Gallery in Brooklyn
Tanya Weddemire Gallery in Brooklyn welcomes the New Year with its first exhibition of 2025, “I GOT A STORY TO TELL.” This impactful Black History Month Activation, running from February 1st to March 8, 2025, will present the works of four dynamic female artists: Blu Murphy, Brittney S. Price, Kayln Webster, and Lex Marie.
This showcase marks the curatorial debut of Tatianna Mack, Art Liaison at the Tanya Weddemire Gallery, setting the stage for an exciting and meaningful year ahead.
“I GOT A STORY TO TELL” is a celebration of Black womanhood, featuring works of acrylic on canvas, mixed-media collage, mixed-media textiles, and mixed-media on canvas and panel. The artists create intricate compositions and utilize evocative materials to express stories of love, pride, resilience, and the rich complexities of identity. Each piece serves as a testament to the power of art as a vessel for preserving and amplifying the voices of Black women across generations.
The exhibition’s inspiration and its essence emerge from the many conversations’ curator Tatianna Mack shared with her maternal grandmother, Etta Mack Johnson, centered on her grandmother’s life experiences and the enduring legacy of their family. Through these narratives, Mack emphasizes the importance of collective memory and shared journeys. In preparation for her debut curation Tatianna Mack shared her vision: “I want viewers to experience and honor the powerful traditions of storytelling leaving with a feeling of empowerment and deeper appreciation for the voices that often go unheard.”
About BLU MURPHY
Brandy “Blu” Murphy is an artist, educator, and creator who was born and raised in Washington, D.C. She is a proud graduate of Morgan State University, a distinguished HBCU, where she studied Fine Arts with a concentration in Mixed Media and received recognition as an award-winning student.
With over a decade of teaching experience in low-income urban communities, Blu is deeply committed to amplifying the voices of individuals who are often undervalued, unappreciated, and unseen. Her signature style blends photography, graffiti, texture, and bold color to tell compelling stories rooted in African American culture and history.
Blu is renowned for capturing the innocence and resilience of her students through her lens, transforming their narratives into striking, layered visual expressions.
About BRITTNEY S. PRICE
Brittney S. Price is a fine artist and muralist based in Los Angeles, CA. Her work creates powerful visual narratives focused on social justice, identity, and current events.
A central element of her artistic practice is the Sankofa Adinkra symbol, which she uses to explore the connections between the past, present, and future from her perspective as a Black American woman.
About KAYLYN WEBSTER
Kaylyn Webster, born in 1999 in Memphis, Tennessee, is a talented and dedicated artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art, specializing in Painting, from the esteemed Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis complemented by a minor in African and African American Studies.
Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Webster continues to refine her craft and contribute meaningfully to the contemporary art landscape.
About LEX MARIE
Lex Marie, born in Prince Georges County, MD, is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses paintings, sculptures, and installations that delve into personal experiences while resonating with the broader African diaspora. Her art critically engages with themes such as adultification biases, food insecurity, and systemic issues within American school systems, themes that were vividly highlighted in her 2022 solo exhibition, “Let Them Kids Be Kids,” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington.
Through her innovative use of everyday and reclaimed materials, Marie transcends traditional artistic boundaries, creating works that challenge societal norms and foster meaningful dialogue. By transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, Marie’s art catalyzes empathy, understanding, and positive change.
About TATIANNA MACK
Tatianna Mack is the dedicated Art Liaison at Tanya Weddemire Gallery. She cultivates and strengthens the connections among artists, collectors, and the community. With a profound appreciation for emerging talent and a commitment to fostering meaningful relationships, Tatianna advocates for intersectionality through diversity in her work.
In 2019, Tatianna launched her blog, The Art of Tati, to promote representation in art spaces. Since then, she has moderated conversations focused on artistry and the transformation of gallery culture and she has led community initiatives in partnership with esteemed organizations, including Black Girls in Art Spaces, A Place Called Home, and Industry City. Tatianna’s innate ability to envision and implement dynamic programming highlights her dedication to art beyond the gallery setting.
She remains guided by her passion for art, fashion, and community, and remains committed to cultivating a more inclusive and vibrant art world.
